Candidate FAQs

Who are we?

We are a non-profit agency, and we are part of the SIL family. We were founded back in 2015, in conjunction with our Liverpool Headteachers, and we understand the importance of flexible working, which is why we offer day to day supply, short term and long-term placements.

We place great importance on recruiting the best and most enthusiastic supply staff. So, if you are flexible, energetic, and positive with a drive to succeed and have a passion for educating children and young people, we want to hear from you!

What are the ‘Must-Have' qualities’ of a successful supply Teacher/TA?

Supply teachers/TAs play a vital role in preventing minimum disruption to pupils’ education. From a candidate’s perspective, supply work offers a degree of flexibility that suits their own needs. Supply allows you to choose your working schedule around your other commitments. But it's also a popular, long-term career option for teachers looking to learn more.

Supply teachers/TAs ensure schools can keep running smoothly in the absence of permanent teachers/TAs by stepping into a different learning environment each day, with different challenges requiring different modes of teaching. This means that the best supply teachers/TAs have an individual toolbox full of skills.

Supply teachers/TAs are adaptable, well-organised, relatable and passionate.

What can Supply work do for you?

Supply teaching gives you the option of a less rigid work schedule. Placements can take you to different schools on the days that you want to work, enabling you to work with different age groups and with children of different levels of ability whilst allowing you to gain a wider knowledge of the classroom curriculum and gives you a greater sense of achievement and satisfaction.

Supply work allows you to own your work and life balance.

This is a big perk of supply teaching, allowing you to manage your own wellbeing. As a supply teacher/TA you need to have a flexible approach to the job. Every school is different. You could find yourself facing different challenges every day, facing variations in ethos, student behaviour, classroom management and internal processes.

As a supply worker you need to be able to take these differences in your stride to create a quality learning environment in any of our settings. As an adaptable teacher/TA you will develop a reputation among schools, thus maximising your chances of securing a stable supply of work in the future.

What skills do I need?

Beyond your experience in the classroom or the office, organisational skills are a must for supply candidates.

Schools want to hire supply teachers/TAs who clearly have everything under control and can hit the ground running. Great organisation skills allow you to turn up to a school at short notice, set up a class and be ready to deliver the required curriculum using lesson plans and teaching materials that are ready to hand.

Your day can change like the weather, as a supply teacher you will accrue a bag full of backup plans to use as and when required. The best supply teachers/TAs can deliver successful, enriching lessons with only an hour’s warning because they keep themselves well-organised.

Can supply work be guaranteed?

We maintain close relationships with our Liverpool schools and work hard to ensure that we have enough registered schools to be able to offer our candidates plentiful vacancies on a daily or weekly basis.

We offer quantity and varied work. We match our registered candidates up to placements at schools where they will be the best fit, this means supply teachers can take on as much paid work as they choose.

Supply work is a fulfilling career path for teachers/TAs, offering flexibility and variety. We pride ourselves on being a reliable, trustworthy, and transparent agency, we help you find work that develops and grows your skills and builds your reputation.

Being punctual, following lesson plans and collaborating with support staff is the way to boosting your chances of finding work at that school again. This could help supply teachers/TAs move into permanent roles if the desire is there.

As a Supply worker we cannot guarantee a paycheque at the end of every month, but we strive to achieve this for all our candidates. Supply work, by its nature, is as and when required. We work hard for you and closely with our schools to cover their needs and requirements.

How much can I earn?

As a supply teacher/TA, you might be under the impression that you will not be as well paid as if you would in a full-time role; however, as a supply teacher/TA, with SIL Agency, you will be paid for each hour/day that you work at a very competitive rate.

Do schools think that supply teachers are not 'real teachers?'

This is a myth. The purpose of supply teachers/TAs is to cover permanent teachers/TAs when they are sick or otherwise absent, not at all an easy task to fulfil, especially with current teacher retention, pay rates, therefore supply candidates are very much appreciated by all our schools - and, of course, by us.
