Reading Quality Mark (RQM)

Our Reading Quality Mark (RQM) has been developed with a focus to promote reading for enjoyment purpose and pleasure amongst children. The programme is accessible to all schools who feel they meet the criteria.

Schools can be accredited with a bronze, silver or gold award, which recognises the effort that they have made in promoting the joy of reading amongst their pupils.

In order to attain accreditation at bronze, silver or gold level, schools are assessed across six key themes:

  • Leadership and management

  • Workforce development

  • Reading promotion

  • Reading events and groups

  • School wide opportunities for reading for enjoyment

  • Family/community involvement/ public library service

This is an exciting project that schools should take full advantage of, in order to increase the achievements of their pupils.

“We are delighted to be supporting this initiative. Reading is incredibly important and encouraging children to enjoy literature helps develop a habit that lasts a lifetime.”
Andy Parkinson, National Literacy Trust

Assessment visits are available in the following formats:

  • A half-day onsite visit consisting of meetings with key stakeholders, learning walk, consideration of any evidence of reading for pleasure within the school

  • A remote visit consisting of virtual meetings with key stakeholders and consideration of any evidence of reading for pleasure in the school.  Evidence should be shared prior to the assessment and this might include, videos, photos and relevant documents.

If you want to familiarise yourself with the RQM criteria beforehand, you can order a copy for £50 (which is then deducted from the £599 if you decide to proceed.)

In addition, we also offer a ‘Health check’ visit, where an assessor will work with your reading ambassador to identify how effectively your school is currently meeting the RQM criteria.

This visit will support schools in determining whether they are ready to progress with the full RQM assessment.
