The Council Health and Safety Unit


The Council Health and Safety Unit are committed to improving health & safety within schools by finding solutions that meet your needs and supporting you in fulfilling your legal responsibilities.
 
Our Unit has detailed knowledge of legislative requirements and recognised best practice within education. We can also respond quickly should a serious incident occur.
 
We offer:

All the Unit staff are Chartered Members of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health have significant experience of working with the education sector.

What to do if there's an accident, near miss or violent incident

Please also refer to the following guidance notes:

For accidents/near misses the Headteacher or nominated person should complete the online form within 24 hours of the incident. 

Report a violent incident here 

The reporting procedure applies to both council employees and non-employees (e.g. contractors, members of the public, pupils etc).  

Once you've filled in the report form, a copy is automatically sent to the Headteacher, Health and Safety Unit and trade union (if RIDDOR and requested). 

If the incident also needs to be reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), as required under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations RIDDOR, please complete the relevant form on the HSE's site at https://extranet.hse.gov.uk/lfserver/external/F2508IE

When reporting under RIDDOR, please also provide the Health and Safety Unit with a copy of the report form and reference number.

Health & Safety training for schools


Training courses available specifically for Liverpool schools; developed and delivered by the Council Health and Safety Unit to assist schools in meeting their legal responsibilities and achieving best practice within health and safety management.

Most of the courses are half day in duration, aimed at providing the appropriate level of information whilst causing minimum disruption to the running of your school.

Our training for 2017-18 is as follows:

Fire marshal and fire extinguisher use
This is a half day course running from 9am to 12 .30pm. Please note that refreshments are not provided. Courses will be held at Croxteth Room, 1st Floor Premier Court on:

Health and safety for staff
This is a half day course running from 9am to 12 .30pm. Tea/coffee will be provided.
Course will be held on Tuesday 17 October 2017 at Toxteth Annexe.
   
Managing work-related stress in schools
This is a half day course running from 9am to 12 .30pm. Tea/coffee will be provided.
Course will be held on Tuesday 7 November 2017 at Toxteth Annexe.
  
Risk assessment
This is a half day course running from 9am to 12 .30pm. Tea/coffee will be provided.
Course will be held on Tuesday 14 November 2017 at Toxteth Annexe.
 
Health and safety awareness in premises management
This is a full day course running from 9am to 4pm. Tea/coffee and lunch will be provided.
Course will be held on Wednesday 6 December 2017 at Toxteth Annexe.
  
Managing fire safety in schools  
This is a half day course running from 9am to 12 .30pm. Tea/coffee will be provided.
Course will be held on Tuesday 12 December 2017 at Toxteth Annexe.
 
Accident and incident reporting and investigation
This is a half day course running from 9am to 12.30pm. Tea/coffee will be provided.
Course will be held on Wednesday 17 January 2018 at Toxteth Annexe.
  
Health and safety for headteachers and senior leaders
This is a half day course running from 9am to 12 .30pm. Tea/coffee will be provided.
Course will be held on Thursday 25 January 2018 at Toxteth Annexe.
 
Managing hazardous substances in schools (COSHH)
This is a half day course running from 9am to 12 .30pm. Tea/coffee will be provided.
Course will be held on Wednesday 7 February 2018 at Toxteth Annexe.
 
Work at height (ladders and stepladders)
This is a half day course running from 9am to 12.30pm. Tea/coffee will be provided.
Course will be held on Tuesday 20 February 2018 at Toxteth Annexe.
 
Manual handling of loads
This is a half day course running from 9am to 12 .30pm. Tea/coffee will be provided.
Course will be held on Wednesday 7 March 2018 at Toxteth Annexe.
 
Health and safety for school governors
Tea/coffee will be provided. Choose either a day or evening course held at Toxteth Annexe on:
Tuesday 13 March 2018  from 10am to 12 noon
Wednesday 14 March 2018 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm
 
General contractor management and CDM
This is a half day course running from 9am to 12.30pm. Tea/coffee will be provided.
Course will be held on Tuesday 20 March 2018 at Toxteth Annexe.
  
Managing events
This is a half day course running from 9am to 12.30pm. Tea/coffee will be provided.
Course will be held on Tuesday 10 April 2018 at Toxteth Annexe.

In addition to all courses scheduled within the brochure the Unit can also deliver Fire Marshal and Fire Extinguisher training at your school.
 
All we require for this is you have at least 8 members of staff to participate and a suitable outdoor space for siting the demonstration equipment.
