Updates on Food Allergen Laws

Article dated: 23/09/2021

From 1st October 2021 the requirements for labelling prepacked for direct sale food (PPDS) is changing across the UK, also known as Natasha’s Law. This will apply to any primary, secondary and nursery schools that provide PPDS food.

The law requires that any food business that produces PPDS food will need to label it with the name of the food and a full ingredients list, including emphasis on any of the 14 major allergens.

For many schools this will be foods pupils/staff select themselves in a display unit, as well as products kept behind a counter such as packaged sandwiches or salad boxes.

It is important schools are aware of these changes in law and help protect their pupils/staff by providing potentially life-saving allergen information.

School Improvement Liverpool offer Foundation Level CIEH Allergen Awareness Training for staff in schools. This training will include all the up to date and relevant information regarding allergen management. Including information and support around Natasha’s Law such as labelling guidance as well as food allergy education and practical tools in school.
