ASCL Annual Conference 2024

Liverpool to host School and College Leaders

Article dated: 05/03/2024

The ASCL Annual Conference 2024 takes place later this week at the ACC Arena, and SIL is excited to be delivering workshops for senior and aspiring leaders.

Laura Kay, SIL School Improvement Partner will deliver a session on "Want to Fix Reading? Do the maths!

It will consider schools that have ‘done the maths’ and invested in colleagues to implement rapidly effective interventions for all learners that need it.

Laura will reflect on how getting reading right can be transformational for a school and its learners and that effective reading development stems from leadership understanding the size of reading and knowing that reading does and should impact every leader's workstream.

Carolyn Harkness, SIO for Attendance will be delivering a session exploring the complex, multi-faceted and ever-changing world of school attendance.

Carolyn will be joined by North Liverpool Academy’s Vice Principal, Iain Robinson, and Banks Road Primary Headteacher, Jamie Wilson – who will share their experiences of how working alongside SIL to develop robust, clear, manageable processes and procedures have led to huge improvements in both data and culture.

“Attendance: There’s no time like the present!” will explore how clarity of roles and responsibilities in addressing issues is the key to effective management of the Support-Challenge model used to respond to the DfE’s Working together to improve school attendance guidance (May 2022).

Both school leaders will share their improvement journey, which began with a full understanding of the context and scale of the problems faced.

By identifying what worked, their attendance teams were able to define impactful processes and build on success.

Their effective “drilling down of data” has now ensured that support and intervention are offered at the earliest point.
