Becoming an advanced EAL Practitioner

With the latest ‘Becoming an advanced EAL Practitioner’ training starting in January, EMTAS Manager Gill Rowlands explains how this accredited course came about and how it’s helped practitioners move their own school-based practice on.

“We welcomed our first cohort in 2019 as we really wanted to develop our relationship with The University of Liverpool and all it has to offer.

The course is accredited, and our aim was to create a course which offered that balance of practical application sat within a strong theoretical framework.

Previous delegates have included school based EAL practitioners and peripatetic staff, as well as those in an advisory role, from both within and outside of Liverpool.

Previous delegates told us they really enjoyed both the theory and practical elements and that the tasks and assignments were really applicable to moving their own school-based practice on.

As a peripatetic teacher also told us that it ‘enabled them to feel more secure in the advice and guidance they offered to teachers.’

We are really excited to begin working with our 4th cohort of students which starts on Thursday 11 January 2024.

It runs over 12 weeks and delivery will be via tutor led sessions online (some sessions will also be pre-recorded to support a flexible approach to study.)

It consists of 24 direct teaching hours and 76 hours of directed study and successful completion and assessment of the module will give learners 10 credits (credits can then be used towards gaining a postgraduate award).

As this is a post graduate course, all applicants must hold an honours degree.

Delivered by both EMTAS staff and lecturers from the University of Liverpool English Language Centre it will explore advanced EAL pedagogy and enhance the skills of both mainstream and specialist practitioners.”

The 12-week accredited course is £700 per delegate.
