Building a Bridge of Books - Launch day

Building a Bridge of Books is a creative project which aims to strengthen the links between home and setting by engaging and involving parents in making and using books with their children. The project supports a practitioner to lead four half day sessions for identified children and their families and includes a separate artist-led workshop.

Embedded within the project are ideas and activities that will encourage the love and development of early reading skills, including speaking and listening. What’s more, through the opportunity to make books together with parents/carers and children will also empower parents/carers to learn how to develop, not only children’s early reading and literacy skills but many other aspects of the EYFS.

This project aims to encourage settings to develop respectful and active partnerships with parents/carers by providing the settings with the opportunity to deepen dialogue with parents/carers about their children's learning and how they can help at home. Strengthening relationships through a fun and interactive project such as this is of particular importance when engaging families, in order that they feel valued and included.

We have provided five workshop plans for you to follow back in your setting, along with some practical materials to get you started. Your setting will also have session delivered by a Quality Improvement Officer and an Artist. Therefore your parents/carers will be asked to attend five sessions of this amazing project within your setting. They will also be invited to attend a celebration event and be rewarded with a certificate of achievement to celebrate taking part in this project.

We would recommend that you invite no more than ten families to join you in these workshops, (parent/carer & child) ideally nursery children.

Time allocated for each session should be around 3 hours. Each workshop will have a welcome song time/activity for the practitioners, parent/carer and children to share together.

There will be an opportunity for practitioners to partake in action research to look at the impact the project is having on children. There is also an optional network session to support practitioners mid-way through the project.

Cost: £900 per school/setting
The project launches 26 January 2018 with a full day training for your practitioner.
