CHATTA, Improving Outcomes in Oracy and Writing for Children in the EYFS

About CHATTA

The award winning CHATTA app (available for iPad, iPhone and Android tablets and phones) engages every learner in talk. Combined with the CHATTA approach the app encourages pupils to reflect on, review and improve oral language – in a similar way to how written work is redrafted. Adult descriptions provide a powerful model for the children to listen to and allows them to link language to their experiences.

By linking images and voice recordings, children build up to a deeper understanding of order and sequence, leading to oral fluency and narrative competence. The images and voice recordings also provide a perfect tool for children to rehearse oral narratives for the purpose of reflection and revision for working memory.

Sharing 'chats' with parents and carers

The sharing ‘chats’ feature provides schools with a powerful and dynamic tool for home/school learning. Chats are easily shared with parents and carers and are viewable on any device connected to the internet.

Using CHATTA to improve outcomes in oracy and writing

Supporting children to reach and exceed the Early Learning Goal in writing is becoming increasingly challenging. This project aims to support early writing skills and technology skills using the CHATTA App.

Delivered in a partnership between SIL and CHATTA, this project aims to train practitioners in using the CHATTA app and refresh practitioners in approaching writing through targeting specific genres.

By making connections to the year 1 expectations, teachers will have a clear understanding of what children need to include in their writing and how to support them to structure oral and then written captions and phrases, leading to more extended writing preparing them to enter year 1 ready to begin the national curriculum .

How we will do this:

The project targets a number of key teaching features:

- Using the app to support children’s communication and language skills

- The opportunity to share learning at home with parents

- Supporting practitioner knowledge of teaching early writing skills

- Using CHATTA to structure writing orally and then by writing sentences.

What the project includes:

- Three full day training sessions led by SIL and CHATTA

- An unlimited user App license to the CHATTA app

- Parent license to allow families to access the CHATTA app

- A support visit and impact review from CHATTA at each school

- A celebration event to track the success of the project
