New to the role of Designated Safeguarding Lead or deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead

Course Overview

This full day course covers the requirements of the DFE guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ and examines Local Children Safeguarding Partnership procedures and other statutory guidance including ‘Working Together to Safeguarding Children’.

Please note, this course is only available to schools who purchase a Safeguarding Service Level Agreement. If you wish to purchase the Safeguarding SLA, please get in touch with [email protected].

Why Attend?

It is a statutory requirement that every school has a trained Designated Safeguarding Lead and at least one person trained to the same standard who can provide cover for the role. Whilst the Designated Safeguarding Lead must be a senior member of staff, this is not the case for those trained to provide cover for the DSL.

Within Annex C of KSCIE, the DFE state:

‘The designated safeguarding lead and any deputies should undergo training to provide them with the knowledge and skills required to carry out the role. The training should be updated every two years...  Training should provide designated safeguarding leads with a good understanding of their own role, how to identify, understand and respond to specific needs that can increase the vulnerability of children, as well as specific harms that can put children at risk, and the processes, procedures and responsibilities of other agencies, particularly children’s social care…

…In addition to their formal training as set out above, their knowledge and skills should be updated (for example via e-bulletins, meeting other designated safeguarding leads, or taking time to read and digest safeguarding developments), at regular intervals, and at least annually, to keep up with any developments relevant to their role.’

What will it cover?

  • Key statutory guidance including ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ and ‘Working Together’
  • Local Safeguarding Children Partnership procedures
  • Principles of working in partnership with other agencies
  • Understanding and applying Local Safeguarding Children Partnership ‘threshold document/ levels of need guidance’
  • Taking appropriate action when children need protection or a statutory ‘child in need’ assessment or an early help assessment
  • How to make a robust referral to children’s services
  • How to contribute effectively to child protection, child in need or early help assessments and review meetings
  • Key learning from serious case reviews
  • Learning in respect of key safeguarding issues
